Joy Himmel

Dr. Himmel currently holds a Psy.D in Psychology, MA in Mental Health Counseling, and BSN in Nursing. She is a licensed Professional Counselor, certified through ANCC as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric Nursing, and a member of the National Association for Cognitive Behavioral Therapists.

Dr. Himmel has over ten years’ experience in hospital –based behavioral health and alcohol and other drug inpatient treatment and seven years’ experience as a clinical director of an intensive outpatient mental health and alcohol and other drug abuse partial hospital and outpatient treatment program.

Dr. Himmel has held a part time lecturer position in Bio-behavioral Health, Counselor Education and Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State Altoona. She worked for the past twenty years at Penn State University Altoona campus as the Health & Wellness Director overseeing health services, counseling and psychological services, health promotion and disability services.. She is currently chair of the CE committee for the National Board for Certified Counselors with the American College Health Association, and is a fellow with the American College Health Association.

She is a site surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), and is the liaison for ACHA to the board of directors with AAAHC. Recent publications and presentations at national meetings have focused on suicide prevention strategies, achieving accreditation in college health, quality improvement strategies, medical home and integrated patient centered models of care. She enjoys working with animals, oil painting, hiking,swimming and good company.
