An Update on the Medical School's Campus Development Project

January 24, 2014

“A milestone has been reached in the construction of the new 47,500-square-foot student center on the Ross University School of Medicine’s (RUSM) Dominica campus”, said Eddie C. McDuffie, director of site development in the DeVry Education Group’s real estate and facilities department. “We had to prepare a suitable foundation,” he explained, which entailed “a huge excavation of the entire footprint of the building, plus a perimeter, hauling off the dirt, and replacing it with engineered fill made of volcanic rock local to a few islands in the area.” He estimated that the project would be complete in about 17 months, in the summer of 2015. The center will be the most prominent building on campus, housing a library, study space and other rooms for teaching and learning, a vendor-based food court, and more. He noted that it is RUSM’s policy to engage local contractors for campus construction projects whenever possible.

In addition to this major construction project, there have been several other significant improvements to the facilities on campus recently, according to Ryan Didier, Executive Administrator. “There are four new ICM (Introduction to Clinical Medicine) lab rooms, furnished like a doctor’s exam room, where students learn to interact with standardized patients.” Each is equipped with a camera to record students’ performances.

“We also created a new, larger family lounge, remodeled the day school, adding three new classrooms and built a gazebo with a covered picnic area,” Didier said. “This is an enhanced, family-friendly space on campus, so that there will be no infringement on our students’ space.” He added that a sound wall was built to reduce the noise created by the new back-up generator that was recently installed, and two new tennis courts and a basketball court are also under construction, as is the 250-thousand-gallon back-up water tank.
