Fundamentals of Biomedical Science I

This block includes a single module preparing students for future learning: The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science module, part I, provides core concepts of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, histology, and embryology in addition to an introduction to pharmacology and microbiology. Concurrently, students also receive gross anatomy lectures and participate in dissection labs that will continue throughout semesters 1 and 2. Students begin the PBL program which helps develop critical thinking, demonstrates the use of evidence-based medicine, and provides a clinical context to basic science learning. Clinical training also begins in this module, with lectures and lab instruction in the doctor-patient relationship, SPIRIT competencies, and simulator demonstrations. In general, this module encompasses basic information that is necessary for understanding what is presented in organ systems-based modules which follow.
