Joseph Flaherty to lead nationally recognized program to address nation's healthcare goals

02/17/11

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ—February 17, 2011—Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new dean. An accomplished leader with a strategic vision for excellence in instruction and student performance, Joseph Flaherty, MD—currently dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM)—will officially begin his new role on May 7, 2011. Dr. Flaherty will first focus on strengthening the clinical education program and engage with the national medical education community to raise awareness of the school and its reputation.

“It is a tremendous opportunity for an academic leader to advance a nationally recognized program that makes a large contribution to the nation’s most critical healthcare goals,” said Dr. Flaherty. “Ross University School of Medicine educates quality physicians, many of whom select primary care— an area of critical shortage in the US healthcare system.  I look forward to bringing my years of experience as a physician and educator to the School, and to continuing the development of the exemplary program that has already been established.”

Flaherty has been dean of UICOM—the nation’s largest medical school—for over six years. The college has comprehensive regional campuses in Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and Urbana-Champaign with a highly diverse student population. Before accepting the lead position at the college, Flaherty was head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). A medical faculty member, clinician and researcher since 1975, he received his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine’s Chicago campus, where he also completed an internship in pediatrics and a residency in psychiatry. He received additional research training in social psychiatry at UIC and in sociology at London University.

“As the US deals with a growing physician shortage, we are responsible for ensuring our students graduate with exceptional clinical competency and are prepared for changes in health delivery,” said Dr. Thomas Shepherd, president of Ross University. “We are committed to the continuous improvement of Ross University School of Medicine and are excited to have Dr. Flaherty directing this next stage of development. Dr. Flaherty is an educational leader who can expand our high-quality academic foundation with ambition for the future of medical education.”
