Dr. Donald Smith Named to Ross Board of Trustees


North Brunswick, NJ – Feb. 29, 2012 – Ross University School of Medicine and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine today announced that Dr. Donald Smith has been named to the schools’ Board of Trustees. Dr. Smith currently serves as Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Austin O. Hooey Dean Emeritus, following his 10-year tenure as Cornell’s dean. Dr. Smith also continues to educate students as a professor of surgery at Cornell, a position he has maintained since 1987.

“I look forward to using my experience and passion for veterinary medical education to help influence the development of the next generation of veterinarians to not only advance animal health, but also to promote closer ties with our colleagues in human medicine,” said Dr. Smith.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the Ross University School of Medicine and the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, both members of the DeVry Inc. family of institutions. The addition of Dr. Smith results in nine total directors, including seven independent members, led by Chairman Dr. Thomas Hollinger.

Prior to joining Cornell University, Dr. Smith served as the chair of the department of surgical sciences at the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. He has also held positions at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and is a diplomate (member) of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Originally from Ontario, Canada, Dr. Smith received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Guelph in Ontario.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Smith has earned several notable honors including New York State Veterinarian of the Year, the Andrew Smith Gold Medal for Academic Achievement and being named as a member of the National Academy of Practices for Veterinary Medicine.

He joins eight other trustees:

Vice Chairman Mark Siegler, MD, FACP, Lindy Bergman Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Surgery, Executive Director of Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence and Director of MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago.

Richard Carmona, RN, MD, MPH, FACS, Former Surgeon General of the U.S., Distinguished Professor of Public Health at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona and Vice Chairman and CEO of Canyon Ranch.

Connie Curran, RN, Ed D, FAAN, President of Curran Associates and Director of DeVry Inc., Hospira Inc., Volcano Inc. and METI.

Amy Pollack, MD, MPH, FACOG, FACPM, Global Medical Director of Covidien and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University School of Public Health.

Alvin Tarlov, MD, Professor of Medicine Emeritus and former chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and former president of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
