North Brunswick, NJ–April 20, 2010—On January 19th, a team of physicians at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center in Christiansten, St. Croix, performed the first open-heart surgery in the US Virgin Islands. The hospital's cardiac surgeon and Ross alum, Dr. Moses deGraft-Johnson ‘01, his brother Dr. John deGraft-Johnson who is also a cardiac surgeon, and a team of highly trained physicians and nurses performed the surgery on a female patient from Saint Croix.

Since January’s successful open heart surgery, there has been continuous training of the local staff and recruitment of specialized support staff at the hospital. Dr. Kiren Pai ‘00, an anesthesiologist based in Florida and Ross graduate has been instrumental in the training process. The hospital’s second and third surgeries took place on March 29th and 31st. These surgeries were done solely by Dr deGraft-Johnson and the Juan F. Luis Hospital team.

“I am confident that we are ready to provide open heart surgery to the territory of the US Virgin Islands and the Caribbean region. There is no longer a need for any of our residents to have to go off-island to seek these services. This will help to alleviate a tremendous financial and emotional burden to the patients and their families,” Dr. deGraft-Johnson said.

Dr. Moses deGraft-Johnson moved to the Virgin Islands with his wife, Dr. Latifa deGraft-Johnson ‘01, and their three children. Dr. Latifa deGraft-Johnson is a family practice physician and medical director of deGraft-Johnson Medical Associates.
