Ross University School of Medicine Announces Search for New Dean

North Brunswick, NJ–June 21, 2010—Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) announced today that they have engaged Isaacson, Miller to search for a new University dean, as Mary Coleman, MD, PhD, who has been serving as dean since 2006, is concluding the final year of her contract and has decided to pursue other professional opportunities.

“We’re seeking a dynamic individual who has demonstrated extraordinary vision and leadership to guide the medical school into the future,” said Dr. Thomas Shepherd, president of Ross University. “As our nation grapples with the reform of its healthcare system, we are responsible for ensuring our students are prepared for changes in health delivery and graduate with exceptional clinical competency. We are committed to the continuous improvement of Ross University School of Medicine as a world class leader in medical education.”

During her tenure, Dean Coleman has been responsible for significant academic improvements and exceptional outcomes, including the development of a new Foundations of Medicine curriculum which will be implemented this year.  The new dean will build on this foundation, ensuring that future development of the School will continue to prepare physicians to meet the significant and evolving demands of the US healthcare system. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) projects a serious shortfall of physicians in the foreseeable future, and Ross graduates are a significant part of the solution for ensuring that Americans continue to receive high quality medical care.

Other candidate qualities being sought include a commitment to education, an understanding of national health policy, expertise in leading an innovative curriculum, successful academic governance in pre-clinical and clinical settings, and the ability to articulate and uphold exceptional standards for clinicians and scientists.

“This search is a top priority for Ross University” said Dr. Shepherd. “We seek a leader to build upon the high quality academic foundation that exists, and drive the creation and implementation of an ambitious vision for the future.”

Under the direction of Dr. Shepherd as chair, the search committee and the selection process will include representatives from senior management of Ross University, its Board of Trustees, the parent-organization DeVry Inc., and representatives of RUSM faculty, administrators, student government and alumni.

The search firm, Isaacson, Miller, has the nation’s largest higher education practice recruiting presidents, provosts, deans and vice presidents for a wide range of public and private clients.  The firm has a particularly strong academic medical practice. In recent years, the firm has conducted searches for the presidency of the AAMC, the CEO/dean of NYU Medical Center, the dean of the University of Vermont Medical School, the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Medical Campus at Worcester, the EVP/dean of the University of Connecticut Medical Center, the chancellor for the University of California at San Francisco, the dean at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and is currently engaged in the EVP/dean search for the University of Pennsylvania.
