North Brunswick, NJ–January 4, 2010–John Graham has become the first Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine student to receive the Simmons Educational Fund (SEF) Business Aptitude Award, an award given to third year students to bring attention to the importance of business education in veterinary practice.

"It is exciting to be the first Ross student to receive this award," Graham said. “I’ve always been interested in the business side of things, so this opportunity allowed me to tie a lot of my interests together. I hope my experience will inspire other Ross students to participate in the future.”

Graham, an executive member of the Ross chapter of the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA), will be presented with the award—which consists of a $15,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC)—in January at the VBMA’s national meeting at the NAVC.

Of the 29 veterinary schools that take part in the Simmons contest, Ross University is the first and only international school participant.

“The applicants who win this award are some of the sharpest and most passionate students I’ve ever met,” said David King, DVM, SEF trustee and charter member of the Association of Veterinary Practice Management Consultants & Advisors. “They are going to be successful in veterinary practice because they know that understanding the business side of things is just as important as being a good veterinarian.”

“The competition for this award is stiff, and John is a deserving winner,” said Dr. Guy St. Jean, associate dean for academic affairs at Ross University. “His professional aptitude and goal-oriented nature make him a good ambassador for Ross University.”
