Simulation Institute Earns Prestigious Accreditation from SSH
“This is a very big deal,” said Associate Dean, David Pederson, about the accreditation of Ross University School of Medicine’s (RUSM) Simulation Institute on the Dominica campus by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). “It validates the quality of teaching, learning and faculty development. This is a voluntary accreditation process and not many programs choose to go through the rigor of the self-study and site visit.”
Senior Associate Dean, Wm. Lynn Weaver, MD, FACS, said, “I am extremely proud of the leadership and staff of this outstanding center.”
RUSM Simulation Manager, Lisa Buckley, MS, PA-C, the driving force behind efforts to obtain SSH accreditation, said that the simulation lab accommodated 4,450 student-contact hours as part of the curriculum in 2013, with 2,225 participants using the facility, which, in preparation for student practical exams, is open seven days a week until 10 p.m. This schedule “let’s the student be flexible,” she said. She and her team developed and documented policies and procedures, compiled the data required by SSH, and prepared for the site visit by the accreditors.
“This is a big honor,” said Dr. Joseph Flaherty, Dean and Chancellor of RUSM. “The accreditation by SSH is a testament to our level of excellence that is now recognized internationally. It acknowledges our commitment to the quality of education and our investment in a technologically advanced learning environment.”
