NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ—June 2, 2011— Themes of advocacy and public service will be the focus of Congressman John Garamendi’s keynote speech as he addresses hundreds of students receiving their medical and veterinary degrees from Ross University. Among the new physicians and veterinarians will be the Congressman’s daughter, Elizabeth, who graduates from the University’s School of Medicine.

This year, Ross University will combine the graduation ceremonies for its School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine. The event will take place June 10 at 10 a.m. at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

“It will be such an honor to address Ross University’s passionate and dedicated graduating class,” says Garamendi. “Also, being a part of the ceremony in this way will be special for me as I get to be a participant in my daughter’s major accomplishment.”

“We asked U.S. Congressman Garamendi to speak to our medical and veterinary students because of his diverse experience in public health, animal advocacy, consumer activism, and international mission work,” says Ross University President Thomas Shepherd, DHA. “His professional and mission experience exemplifies the irrepressible passion for medicine and idealism our students possess. I’m certain our students will be inspired by him.”

During Garamendi’s tenure in the California legislature, he played a pivotal role in establishing the state’s emergency medical system and expanding community health clinics. As California’s Insurance Commissioner, he reestablished an aggressive antifraud taskforce. Also, the Congressman led Peace Corps mission trips during the Ethiopian-Eritrea and Congo Civil Wars – helping to negotiate peace treaties.

Having grown up on his family’s cattle ranch in Mokelumne Hill, CA, Garamendi has a deep concern for the well-being of animals. A former board member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Garamendi received an IFAW Lifetime Achievement Award for his “steadfast commitment to the environment, conservation, and animal welfare throughout his service in the California legislature and the U.S. Department of the Interior.”

The upcoming ceremony will not be the first Ross University graduation the Congressman will have attended. Last year Garamendi was among the family and friends who cheered on his son-in-law, Greg Kann, as he received his medical degree.

Ross has a history of support from U.S. lawmakers, including Congressman Kurt Schrader, DVM, who addressed veterinary school graduates last year.
