Alumna Spotlight: DeAnn Bing, MD '09

As we celebrate Black History Month during the month of February, we want to acknowledge and recognize the incredible accomplishments of our African American Alumni, including Dr. DeAnn Bing ’09 the Co-founder of HomeCare Medicine of Atlanta, providing patients with an effective conduit of care from the hospital to home.

When Dr. DeAnn Bing was young, she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and underwent spinal correction surgery. The Orthopedic surgeon that performed her surgery articulated such care and compassion that it deeply resonated with DeAnn. He was attentive and considerate, preparing and educating Bing and her family on the surgical procedure, answering their questions and addressing their concerns. Soon after, Bing decided to pursue in medicine, to give back and inspire others, just like the Orthopedic Surgeon that operated on her as a young girl.

After graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, majoring in English with a Pre-med minor, DeAnn began to explore medical school options. She was drawn to Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) because it offered her the opportunity to study medicine abroad, allowing her to gain a global perspective and an earnest appreciation of how her medical knowledge could positively influence the surrounding community and back home in the U.S.

Upon acceptance, DeAnn arrived in Dominica in May 2005 to start her Medical Sciences studies.
She recalls her first semesters at RUSM as brimming with incredible memories and tough lessons. DeAnn quickly learned to be resourceful as she shadowed local physicians, learning how to care for the native Dominicans. She developed engaging relationships with the natives of the island, further enhancing her perspective of the impact of the medical community on a broader scale. Her fondest RUSM memory was when she was President of the Black Student Association (BSA) and they hosted a fashion show, benefitting the surrounding community. They raised enough money to continually fund the outreach and mentorship programs, helping the local Dominicans.

Upon graduating from RUSM in 2009, DeAnn began her residency at Morehouse School of Medicine, specializing in Internal Medicine. Dr. Bing chose IM as a specialty since it paired well with her inquisitive personality. Internal Medicine allows her to take a holistic approach to treating her patients, treating their mind and body, from head to toe. At Morehouse School of Medicine, she was also named interim Chief Resident. It was an honor that DeAnn never took for granted, for her it was a reflection of the years of hard work and perseverance, warranting the confidence from her peers and program director.

Currently, Dr. DeAnn Bing is a physician that wears her white coat in several vital roles. She’s a Nocturnist in Hospital Medicine and co-founder of HomeCare Medicine of Atlanta. In 2013, HomeCare of Atlanta was born out of the need for a conduit of care from the hospital to home.

As a physician working in Hospital Medicine, Dr. Bing began to regularly see patients return to the hospital after discharge within days or weeks with a decompensation of their disease. Their decline was most often due to lack of follow-up with a primary care physician, deficient understanding of their disease process and the urgent need to adhere to their medication regimen. To help mitigate the situation, Dr. Bing started HomeCare Medicine of Atlanta, a home based primary care mobile practice to serve the most ailing and frail patients who are not readily able to leave their home to see a physician for their primary needs. By caring for patients in their homes within 30 days of their discharge, Dr. Bing is often able to reduce the number of patients returning to the ER for decompensations. Furthermore, as Internists, the HomeCare Medicine physicians are able to identify those who were most likely be immobile upon their discharge, therefore offering continuous primary care services in the patients’ home. As an extension to her primary care mobile practice, Dr. Bing also provides aesthetic services, Atlanta Mobile Aesthetics and Hydrotherapy, allowing her to care for her patients inside and out, helping them feel and look their best.

Dr. DeAnn Bing hopes to continue on her mission to help those that cannot always help themselves in the greater Atlanta Community. As a physician and a product of RUSM and Morehouse School of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, her true desire is to serve the underserved.
