Host Alumni FAQs
Greetings Alumni! For your convenience, a list of FAQs is available for reference below. If you have any additional questions, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at [email protected]
Successful HOST pairings are based on the particular student needs in a given region, as well as the total number of Alumni HOST Ambassadors available in those areas. Some locations will have a higher demand than others (i.e. New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California) and not all ambassadors will have the opportunity to host a student this year. We understand the impact our alumni have on the student experience and will do everything we can to pair students with Alumni HOST Ambassadors whenever possible.
WHAT IS A HOST AMBASSADOR?
HOST Alumni Ambassadors are RUSM alumni who volunteer to host a student visiting their area during residency interviews. HOST Alumni Ambassadors help to offset the financial burden of traveling for residency interviews by offering students housing, meals, transportation and/or insight on the area and program/hospital. As a Alumni Ambassadors, you are truly helping a student as they prepare for life beyond medical school.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR WILL THE VISITS TAKE PLACE?
Most residency interviews occur between October and January.
WHERE IS THE PROGRAM AVAILABLE?
The pilot program will focus on areas of locations with a high population density of RUSM alumni including Chicago, Miami, New York City and Los Angeles. Depending on the response from the students and alumni, the HOST program could potentially match a student with RUSM alumni anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
HOW DO I SIGN UP TO BE A HOST AMBASSADOR?
Complete the registration form here.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR HOSTING A STUDENT?
Once we receive a student request for your area, Alumni Relations will contact you to determine availability. If we are able to match you with a student, we will send an introductory email (including contact information for both parties) connecting you and the student. From there, the student is responsible to contact you to share additional details of their travel and interview plans, and to arrange the visit.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE WILL I BE CONTACTED?
Students are asked to contact their HOST Alumni Ambassadors as soon as they receive the contact information.
WHAT HAPPENS IF TRAVEL OR INTERVIEW PLANS CHANGE OR GET CANCELLED?
The student that you are hosting will contact you as soon as possible to let you know about any change in their travel plans. Likewise, if you are unable to accommodate the student for any reason, please contact the student as soon as possible so they can make alternate arrangements.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE STUDENT I AM HOSTING DOESN'T SEEM ENGAGED?
You may recall how stressful a time residency interviews can be, and students handle this stress differently. Some students may be active and engaged, while others may be more reserved and focused. Their engagement, or lack thereof, is not a reflection of you and we ask that you please be understanding.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING AFTER THE VISIT?
Please send us any photos or feedback you may have of your HOST experience (be sure the student knows you’re sharing!). We’d love to share them on our website and through social media to promote the program. You will also receive a brief online evaluation. HOST Alumni Ambassadors’ names and information will be kept on file for future years and classes, and may be removed from active search at any time by contacting Alumni Relations.
