BRIAN Y. CHOU, MD '09

ENDOCRINOLOGIST/PARTNER ● WELLSPIRE MEDICAL GROUP

Since he was a young child, Dr. Brian Chou has led an incredibly active lifestyle. He played tennis in middle school and high school to weight lifting and bodybuilding in college and medical school, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu through his residency and fellowship. It was his early interest in sports and the keen understanding that nutrition was the foundation of human health that led Dr. Chou to pursue a career in medicine.

After graduating from the University of Texas, Austin with a degree in Biology, Dr. Chou applied to all medical school programs in Texas, through Texas medical school application program, without success. As he was exploring his other options he worked at a local optometry retail store, trying to figure out his next move. Upon the recommendation of his mother, who’s close friend had a daughter that successfully attended Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), Chou explored the opportunity that RUSM had to offer, applied, interviewed and was promptly accepted. He started his MD journey in Dominica in 2005 and describes his experience at RUSM as intense, but incredibly memorable – he studied hard and played hard. He fondly recalls enjoying snorkeling excursions post-exams.

Upon graduating from RUSM in 2009, Dr. Chou initially did not match – he quickly reached out to RUSM for guidance and emailed the remaining residency programs with scramble positions available. He received an interview at Seton Hall University’s St. Francis Medical Center, where he completed his Residency in Internal Medicine and was named Associate Chief Resident. It was during this time, that Dr. Chou’s interest in the nourishment essentials of human physiology and well-being began to flourish. He found himself continually searching through scientific journals and literature regarding nutrition and physiology, to further his knowledge to optimize nutrition and exercise training. Throughout his Residency, he enjoyed sharing his working knowledge and experience of the human body and diet regimen to help patients, especially diabetic patients during continuity clinics. The positive feedback from patients, encouraged Dr. Chou to continue on to a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Thomas Jefferson University.

Currently, Dr. Brian Chou is an Endocrinologist and Partner at Wellspire Medical Group, a multi-specialty group, in Humble, Texas. He describes his approach to medicine as integrated, by blending the knowledge of modern medicine with the wisdom of natural nutrition to offer a progressive and dynamic style of medicine. He continues to educate his patients on the necessities for a balanced well-being through sustenance knowledge and encouragement of an active lifestyle. Extending his outreach to his patients, Dr. Chou hosts a monthly diabetes support group and an active Facebook page @endocrinedoc, where he shares his lifestyle tips and healthy cooking recipes. He’s also considered expanding upon his fit lifestyle by opening a tasty, healthy lifestyle ‘fast-food’ restaurant, but only time will tell. Until then, he will continue to train for his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt as he practices the area of medicine he is most passionate about: human physiology, nutrition, patient education and continuity of care.
