Dr. Alina Beyer joined the ranks of RUSM in May 2015, as an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine. Prior to coming to RUSM Dr. Beyer was, since 2011, an instructor and lecturer in Family Medicine and Pediatrics/Neonatology at the University of Cape Town Medical School’s MBChB Program. Dr. Beyer was also an attorney of the High Court of South Africa, and a member of the Cape Bar, in Cape Town.
A native of Romania, Dr. Beyer earned her MD from University Carol Davila in Bucharest. In 1991 she moved to South Africa, where whe was awarded an LLB, LLM, and a diploma in Higher Education for Health Professionals from the University of Cape Town. In the fall of 2001 Dr. Beyer was enrolled in a postdoctoral research program at the University of Tennessee, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, under the guidance of Dr. Peter Doherty.
As an MD, Dr. Beyer practiced mainly in the field of Pediatrics, including neonatology, emergencies and intensive care at Red Cross Children’s Memorial Hospital, in Cape Town, South Africa. In the 90’s, she worked for four years as a resident in Immunology/Allergology at Groote Schuur Hospital, in Cape Town, and for two years in the Trauma and Casualty unit at Victoria Hospital, also in Cape Town.
Dr. Beyer now teaches what she loves most - clinical medicine. She is keen in researching and applying interactive teaching methods that allow a better integration of basic sciences and clinical knowledge in the process of clinical reasoning, such as simulation-based education. For this purpose, Dr. Beyer trained at the Center of Medical Simulation, of Harvard University and MIT, in Boston, in 2016 and she is now pursuing the formal certification as a healthcare simulation educator (CHSE) with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
At RUSM, Dr. Beyer lectures in various areas, including medical law, a field in which I practiced back in South Africa since 2007.
Outside of RUSM, Dr. Beyer’s main interests include her three children, two grandchildren, her pets and books.
