José Gómez, MBBS

Instructor, Anatomy

Dr. José Martín Gómez is an Instructor of Anatomy in the Department of Medical Foundations at RUSM. Dr. Gómez states that teaching has always been a calling for him in whatever path of life he found himself. It is because of his passion for teaching that he sought knowledge throughout life. He strongly believes that these two concepts of learning and teaching are mutually beneficial to each other, showing that one can only teach what is learnt and this contributes to the yearning for and strengthening of knowledge. He confessed that his passion for teaching went hand in hand with his desire to become a doctor.

In 2009, Dr. Gómez completed Internship and graduated from the LatinAmerican School of Medicine in Havana – Cuba, obtaining the degree of Doctor of Medicine. It was while in medical school that he realized his interest in Gross Anatomy, fortifying his choice and determination towards a surgical specialty like Orthopedics.

Initiating his post-graduate studies, while working in Public Health for the Ministry of Health in Cuba, he commenced with Comprehensive General Medicine earning his first specialty degree in 2012. Subsequently, Dr. Gómez continued his path on to a second specialty, attaining a degree in Orthopedics and Traumatology in 2016. Dr. Gómez, a BLS & ACLS provider, returned to Barbados from Cuba after a long road of self-development within that nation. That afforded him the core for his enthusiasm, giving him the eleven (11) years’ experience in the various aspects and settings as a healthcare professional. His experience ranged from being a Family Physician, Emergency Physician, Traumatologist, Orthopedic Surgeon, and Teacher and Mentor for medical & nursing students/interns/junior doctors.

During Dr. Gómez’s career he was fortunate to align myself in positions that allowed him the teaching experience he acquired. He considers mentoring, supervising and teaching to be a privilege as he can share his knowledge, experience and guidance with his peers, students and juniors through different teaching strategies. It is his nature to always do his best in any imminent tasks, always looking to achieve and excel. He is keenly interested and focused in continuing his teaching experience to share his knowledge and strategies within academia, contributing to the development of medical professionals. It is with great enthusiasm that he seeks to one day hold the position of Professor in an anatomical sciences faculty.
