Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) today announced the recent appointments of Oliver T. Brooks, MD; Mary E. Guerra, DVM and Selwyn O. Rogers, Jr., MD, MPH, FACS to their Board of Trustees.

“The board is thrilled to welcome our newest members,” said Susan Groenwald, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, chair of the board. “We strove to select new trustees who share our institutions’ commitment to increasing access to care while continuing our tradition of diversity of gender, ethnicity, thought and experience on the board. Not only did Drs. Brooks, Guerra and Rogers exceed these criteria, they also bring unique insights and perspectives to further strengthen the board. I look forward to partnering with them as we empower our students to make inspiring contributions in the medical and veterinary fields.”

RUSM and RUSVM are part of Adtalem Global Education, which provides access to education, certifications and upskilling programs at scale through its network of institutions that have a focus in the healthcare sector, including medical, nursing and veterinary programs.

“We are pleased to have Drs. Brooks, Guerra and Rogers join the Ross University Board of Trustees,” said John Danaher, MD, president, Adtalem Medical and Veterinary. “Their expertise in healthcare, wealth of strategic experience in the medical and veterinary fields, and dedication to increasing access to care will be invaluable as we continue to focus on training the next generation of practice-ready physicians and veterinarians to serve diverse communities.”

Dr. Brooks is chief medical officer at Watts Health Care Corporation, a private, nonprofit network of community-based health centers offering primary and specialty services in Los Angeles. Dr. Brooks serves as chairman of the Immunize LA Families Coalition; medical director, consultant, LA Care Health Plan and is active in numerous healthcare committees and task forces. In 2021, Dr. Brooks was appointed to the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices, the subcommittee of the CDC that that determines all vaccine policy in the U.S. and is past president of the National Medical Association (NMA). Early in his career, he was a pediatrician at North Oakland Pediatric Medical Group in Oakland, Calif. Dr. Brooks completed his residency at Children's Hospital Oakland. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Howard University College of Medicine and his Bachelor of Science from Morehouse College.

As regional vice president of Banfield Pet Hospital – the nation’s leading provider of preventive veterinary care with more than 1,000 hospitals across the U.S. – Dr. Guerra oversees client experience and Associate engagement for hospitals in the Northern California region, leading teams to provide high-quality preventive veterinary care to pets. She has held roles of increasing responsibility at Banfield since joining the organization in 2008, including associate DVM, certified chief of staff, medical director, field director, and interim regional vice president of veterinary quality. Dr. Guerra serves as the board president of A Caring of Doctor of Texas and is part of the Animal Service Advisory Committee of the Irving City Counsel Advisory Board and the Animal Welfare Committee of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA). Dr. Rogers is professor and chief of trauma and acute care surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences. Ross University School of Medicine is accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP, www.caam-hp.org).

CAAM-HP is the legally constituted body established in 2003 under the aegis of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), empowered to determine and prescribe standards and to accredit programs of medical, dental, veterinary and other health professions education on behalf of the contracting parties in CARICOM.

Accreditation by CAAM-HP is a rigorous, peer review process which examines all aspects of a medical program. The CAAM-HP board, an independent and autonomous body of professionals, only certifies medical schools which are operating at the highest levels of industry standards.

Through this accreditation, the CAAM-HP provides assurance to medical students, graduates, the medical profession, healthcare institutions, and the public that programs leading to qualifications in medicine meet appropriate national and international standards for educational quality, and that the graduates have a sufficiently complete and valid educational experience.
