RUSM Hosts Community Health Fair in St. Kitts
In partnership with the Ministry of Health Department and Mary Charles Hospital, Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) organized a free community health fair on Saturday, June 30.
The health fair took place on the grounds of the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux and during the 4-hour event, Ross University School of Medicine students and faculty volunteers provided residents with health screenings as well as health education.
“The fair is a part of the training of the students, in that we have done the basic training with them, but now they get a chance to apply it to the patients in the community under supervision,” noted Dr. Yasmin Burnett, professor of clinical medicine and director of the Clinical Community Program at the Ross University School of Medicine.
There were a number of stations under tents where patients underwent BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose and general vision screenings, as well as checking on the heart and lungs and patient education.
“The fair is also part of giving back to the country, which is our philosophy because we want our students to grow with that responsibility. As an organization, we recognize that we need to give back to the community that we are involved in.”
As an institution, Ross University School of Medicine will continue to identify ways to support the community through additional efforts of this nature.
