Chikere Thomas

Biography
Chikere Thomas, MSc, is a Registered Counseling Psychologist. Chikere received her education and training from The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus. She also obtained education and training from the UWI Open Campus, UWI St. Augustine Campus and University of the Southern Caribbean. Prior to joining Ross University School of Medicine, Ms. Thomas held positions as a Counseling Psychologist, a Researcher, a School Social Worker and a Guidance Counselor.
Chikere strives to establish and maintain a collaborative and authentic therapeutic alliance with students. Her theoretical approach to counseling is eclectic, in which she utilizes varied traditional and non- traditional modalities and techniques throughout her practice. Through her training and work experiences, she has built capacity in multiculturalism, as she has worked with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ms. Thomas has a keen interest in raising awareness and sharing information about mental health. She has created psychosocial content for UWItv, such as the psychological impact of infertility and women’s mental health, psychological impact of natural disaster and psychiatry in the Caribbean, which were published. She has also a published contributor to Words in the Bucket: Caribbean Connection Column.
Her research interest includes, psychological resilience to natural disaster, sex work in the Caribbean, juvenile crime, and gender-based violence. Chikere also has a keen interest in social justice, advocacy, policy and program development, and empowering of marginalized population.
Chikere is a member of the Barbados Society of Psychology, the Paramedical Council of Barbados and the A.C.C.T.T. Action Collaborative Caraïbe Thérapie Trauma.
