The RUSM Global Health elective offers students an invaluable experience that helps shape their future medical careers. Through hands-on care, cultural sensitivity, community involvement, and resilience, participants gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of global healthcare. Read on to hear how their experiences benefited them:

    Hands-On Care and Resourcefulness

One of the most significant aspects of the RUSM Global Health elective is the hands-on care students are able to provide. Alinor Mezinord, MD ’24, spent time in Uganda, where he learned the importance of resourcefulness and adaptability. He focused on the patient as a whole, rather than just their symptoms, and developed essential clinical skills in areas such as physical exams and diagnostic techniques. The experience prepared him to provide more comprehensive and patient-centered care in the U.S.

    Cultural Sensitivity and Understanding

The Global Health experience also highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity. Carmen Ruby, MD ’24, learned to understand and respect the cultural beliefs and practices of her patients, enhancing her ability to connect with them and provide personalized care. This cultural awareness is essential in today’s diverse healthcare landscape, where understanding and respecting patient backgrounds can significantly improve outcomes.

    Community Involvement and Impact

Community involvement is a cornerstone of the RUSM Global Health elective. Nicole Kristy Carrido, MD ’24, had a memorable first week in the Dominican Republic, participating in a community health fair. The event provided basic medical services and health education, and the community's enthusiasm and gratitude highlighted the impact of even small interventions. The experience taught her the importance of resourcefulness, adaptability, and community-based healthcare, and gave her the confidence to handle a wide range of clinical situations and approach patient care with a holistic and compassionate mindset.

    Resilience and Empathy

Resilience and empathy are also key takeaways from the elective experience. Hussein Harb, MD ’24, experienced a daily routine in India that evolved from clinical observations to active participation in patient care and community health initiatives. He learned to balance the demands of a busy healthcare environment with personal well-being. The resilience and spirit of the people he met will stay with him, reminding him of the importance of empathy and perseverance in his medical practice.

    Conclusion

The RUSM Global Health elective had a profound impact on these students, helping to shape their medical careers and personal growth. Each participant’s unique experience highlights the importance of hands-on care, cultural sensitivity, community involvement, and resilience in the practice of medicine. These lessons will undoubtedly guide them as they continue to provide compassionate and effective care to their patients. The program not only equips students with practical skills but also fosters a deeper understanding of the global healthcare landscape, preparing them to be well-rounded and empathetic physicians.

CAAM-HP is the legally constituted body established in 2003 under the aegis of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), empowered to determine and prescribe standards and to accredit programs of medical, dental, veterinary and other health professions education on behalf of the contracting parties in CARICOM.

Accreditation by CAAM-HP is a rigorous, peer review process which examines all aspects of a medical program. The CAAM-HP board, an independent and autonomous body of professionals, only certifies medical schools which are operating at the highest levels of industry standards.

Through this accreditation, the CAAM-HP provides assurance to medical students, graduates, the medical profession, healthcare institutions, and the public that programs leading to qualifications in medicine meet appropriate national and international standards for educational quality, and that the graduates have a sufficiently complete and valid educational experience.
