The care of humanity is a dynamic pursuit that requires our dedication and creativity. Is it any wonder that creativity spills over into other interests? Do you write, draw, create pottery or partake in other artistry as an expressive outlet? These expressions represent our unique community, and I invite you to share your passion as we develop our new creative journal.

Welcome to the launch of RUSM’s Creative Journal Project, a way to celebrate humanities in the medical school environment.

We are now accepting applications for our editorial and review boards.

Our Creative Journal will highlight a collection of professional and provocative artwork submissions from the RUSM community. Entries will consist of many different mediums — photographs, paintings, sketches and literary pieces, including fiction and non-fiction as well as short stories and poems. All submissions must be original. The finished Journal will be published in Spring 2021.

If you are interested in applying for a position on the editorial or review board, please share your qualifications with us and include a detailed explanation of why you are the best candidate to serve on the respective board. We are searching for diverse members who represent our faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.

Chief Academic Officer and Provost Dr. James Record, JD, FACP, will charge the editorial board with overseeing the:

  • Name and theme of the journal
  • Process with detailed timeline
  • Presentation of the final product
  • Composite and charge of the Review Board

The review board will:

  • Provide the artistic, submission and judging guidelines
  • Determine the finalists and winners in each category

We are excited to inspire those in the medical field to incorporate creative elements into their work, and to develop a memorable and beautiful tribute representing our RUSM community. We hope you will consider joining our boards, and soon thereafter, submitting one of your artistic treasures.

In 2020, 91% of RUSM students passed the initial step of the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) on the first attempt. And in 2022-2023, results show yet another strong year for RUSM with a 98% first-time residency attainment rate* thus far. Located on the island of Barbados and with a network of more than 15,000 alumni, RUSM is one of the largest providers of doctors for the U.S. healthcare system. RUSM graduates practice in all 50 states and in Puerto Rico.

*First time residency attainment rate is the percent of students attaining a 2023-24 residency position out of all graduates or expected graduates in 2022-23 who were active applicants in the 2023 NRMP match or who attained a residency position outside the NRMP match.
