Biography
Dr. Sanjay Pooran is a distinguished physician and public health expert whose career spans the intersecting domains of global health security, infectious diseases, and medical education. With experience in high-risk clinical and forensic settings—particularly within inner-city environments in the Caribbean and London. Dr Pooran brings a unique blend of clinical insight, public health acumen, and legal-medical expertise to his global work.
Dr. Pooran serves as a clinical lead and mentor at Ross University School of Medicine and is actively involved in curriculum development and student safety training through programs such as the Introduction to Simulation and Patient Safety (ISPS). His scholarly interests include the development of early warning systems for infectious diseases and the use of crisis communication strategies to strengthen health system responsiveness in low-resource and high-threat environments.
Academic and Clinical Experience:
Dr. Sanjay Pooran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Foundations, where he serves as Clinical Lead for Semester 2 HOII (Haematology, Oncology, Infection and Immunity) and IGMS (Integumentary and Musculoskeletal Systems). He previously held the role of Module Director for Endocrinology. Dr. Pooran pioneered the renaming and designing of the SGL (Small Group Learning) activity to SGL-CSA (Small Group Learning – Clinical Skills Activity) within the HOII and IGMS modules—an innovation that has since shaped the structure of similar sessions across subsequent modules. He has designed and implemented eight new clinical case studies tailored to reinforce clinical reasoning and systems-based learning within these modules. In addition, he introduced and designed the ISPS (Introduction to Simulation and Patient Safety) activity into the HOII curriculum, promoting early exposure to patient safety principles and clinical simulation.
Dr. Pooran has been a driving force in curriculum innovation and pedagogical reform, with a strong emphasis on active learning, clinical integration, and systems-based instruction. His educational philosophy prioritises contextual learning and student engagement, equipping future clinicians with both diagnostic acumen and patient-centred sensitivity. He mentors first-semester medical students and regularly contributes to faculty development activities in clinical education and simulation-based training. His ongoing academic interests lie in medical pedagogy, interdisciplinary curriculum design, and the integration of public health principles into undergraduate medical training.
In parallel with his academic work, Dr. Pooran. He also serves as a Public Governor for University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, playing a vital role in community engagement and governance within one of the UK’s foremost academic health science centres. Furthermore, he is an Associate of the Centre for Epistemic Justice at the University of Kent, where he supports efforts to decolonise global health narratives and advance inclusive, equitable knowledge systems in healthcare.
